4711 Eau de Cologne

Het geheim van de Klokkensteeg nr. 4711
Iedereen kent Eau de Cologne, het Keuls Water dat origineel nr. 4711 draagt. Napoleon gaf in 1796 opdracht om alle huizen van een huisnummer te voorzien. Het pand in de Klokkensteeg (Glockengasse) te Keulen waar de Eau de Cologne werd geproduceerd, kreeg het huisnummer 4711.

Vier jaar eerder al was zoon Wilhelm Mühlens getrouwd met Catharina Moers. Als huwelijksgeschenk kregen ze van de Karthuizermonnik Franz Marina Farina een geheim recept voor "Aqua Mirabilis", zeg maar mirakelwater in gewoon Nederlands. Een van de belangrijkste bestanddelen is de etherische olie uit de bergamot, een heerlijk aromatische citrusvrucht.

Als ondernemer realiseerde Wilhelm Mühlens zich meteen de waarde van dit cadeau. Het "Keuls water Farina" zoals het eerst bekend werd was al snel een succes zodat Wilhelm Mühlens enkele jaren later een eigen parfumeriefabriek begon. 

Die kreeg als adres "Eau de Cologne- & Parfümeriefabrik Glockengasse 4711 gegenüber der Pferdepost von Ferd. Mühlens" om haar te duidelijk te profileren ten opzichte van diverse andere merken die toen allemaal Eau de Cologne produceerden. Hij tekende zelf een goudblauw etiket waarin het huisnummer 4711 een opvallende plaats kreeg. Zelf zal hij nooit hebben kunnen denken dat dit cijfer later de bekende naam voor zijn "aqua mirabilis" zou worden.

"4711 Echt Kölnisch Wasser" is inderdaad wereldberoemd geworden. Na de Dom van Keulen wordt 4711 het vaakst genoemd als typisch Keuls. Het oorspronkelijke huis in de Glockengasse, tegenover het Operagebouw, bestaat nog steeds en is nu een winkel.
